Sales Tax Exemption

As a not-for-profit, Webster University is exempt from paying sales tax to vendors in certain states. The states that do and do not provide sales tax exemption status to Webster University are listed in the Accounting Office website. Do not pay sales tax on invoices from vendors located in the states as listed in the link. If sales tax is included on an invoice from such a vendor, circle it and subtract that amount from the gross amount.

Federal Exemption Letter

The Internal Revenue Service has recognized the University as exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3). The current IRS Exemption letter confirms the University's exempt status.

IRS Form W-9

All U.S. based businesses including corporations, consultants and sole proprietors are required to submit Form W-9 to Purchasing prior to being approved as a vendor in the system. The purpose of this form is to provide the University information for submitting Form 1099 at calendar year end to comply with IRS requirements.

IRS Form W-8BEN

All Non-US taxpayer vendors are required to submit Form W-8BEN if their service is provided within the US. The purpose of this form is to determine the U.S. tax residency status of individuals who are not U.S. citizens and the necessary withholding and reporting obligations of the University.
