Alex Groesch, cello (PREP & C. Lehr), Thomas Johnson, violin (PREP), Jasmine Scott, violin (PREP), and Nomin Zolzaya, cello (PREP) are finalists in the Rising Star Concerto Competition sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. They will compete in Cape Girardeau on February 4.
Shelby Nugent, Horn (PREP), was a finalist in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Competition. There were over 500 finalists out of 5,000 applicants. Only 150 were chosen to attend the Young Arts Week and Shelby was among the chosen.

CMS Violin instructor, Marc Thayer, traveled to Gaza and Cairo in December 2011 to work with young musicians. He encountered some challenges getting into Gaza, but once he arrived he taught and mentored young musicians throughout the region. PREP Program String Quartet Wins First Place at National Chamber Music Competition
The Camerton String Quartet of the Preparatory Program (PREP), placed First in the String Division and First Overall in the Open Division at the Midwest Young Artists 5th Annual Discover National Chamber Music Competition. The competition is sponsored by the Discover Card financial network and took place on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Bennett-Gordon Hall on the campus of the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois.
Members of the Quartet include Rebekah Heckler, violin; Julia Son, violin; Sean Byrne, viola; and Nomin Zolzaya, cello. The Quartet performed the Shostakovich String Quartet No. 10, Op. 118, II. Allegro furioso, and the Brahms String Quartet in a minor, Op. 51, No. 2, I. Allegro ma non troppo at the competition.
The annual competition is designed to provide an educational as well as a competitive experience for young chamber ensembles. The competition is open to chamber ensembles in 12th grade and younger and is comprised of two divisions (Open and MYA). The Camerton Quartet won a $1,000 prize and performed in a Winners Recital on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the Chicago Cultural Center.
CMS Alumni and Nationally Acclaimed Jazz Pianist Peter Martin Awarded an Excellence in the Arts Award at the 2012 St. Louis Arts Awards
Nationally acclaimed Jazz pianist, Peter Martin, was awarded an Excellence in the Arts award at the 2012 St. Louis Arts Awards in January 2012. Peter is an alumni of the Community Music School formerly CASA. He studied piano with Laura Schindler and Jane Allen. Peter and Kelly Martin are current CMS Suzuki parents. Their children Daniel and Rachel study Suzuki violin lessons with Peter’s mother, Rose Martin, who is one of the founders of the CMS Suzuki program. Peter Martin is an acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator. His touring career has taken him to six continents numerous times. In January 2011 Peter performed with a select group of jazz artists at the White House for a State Dinner hosted by President Obama.
PREP Program String Quartet members: Thomas Johnson, violin; Rebekah Heckler, violin; Christopher Goessling, viola; and Maggie Madsen, cello; were selected to perform on the first-ever History to Our Ears: a Youth Music Recital Celebrating Missouri at the Missouri History Museum on March 19 at 7 p.m. Prior to the recital, the group was coached by PROJECT Trio thanks to a partnership with the St. Louis Symphony. The following CMS students won the Laclede Quartet Kids Concert Competition and will perform on the winners concert on March 17 at 7 p.m. at Maryville University’s Auditorium:

• Aisling O’Brien, violin (PREP): tied for Second Place in the Secondary/High School Age Solo category.
• Grant Riew, cello (PREP & Lehr), Brad Riew, piano (Parkin) and Julia Riew, violin (Smart): tied for First place in the Small Ensemble category.
• Rebecca Su, cello (YPSO): tied for Second Place in the Secondary/High School Age Solo category.
• Rich Qian, violin(YPCO): won First Place in the Elementary Age Solo category.
Bea Dageforde, clarinet (Hotle) will attend DePauw University School of Music as Music Business Major. Bea was selected to be a part of "At the Crossroads: History of Blues Music" hosted by The White House, developed by The GRAMMY Museum as a student journalist in February 2012. Aleksis Martin, clarinet (JLE & PREP), won the following Concerto Competitions: St. Charles County Youth Orchestra Mike Russo Concerto Competition, St. Louis Civic Orchestra Florence Frager Young Artist Competition, and the Alton Symphony Orchestra Marie Stillwell Young Artists’ Competition.
Nomin Zolzaya, cello (PREP), was the Runner-Up in the Rising Star Concerto Competition sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra.

Six CMS Students Performed on the St. Louis Classical All-Stars Recital
On March 15th, six talented CMS students presented St. Louis Classical All-Stars, an educational program created by The Sheldon and CMS. Students from several local schools attended the program designed to introduce students to classical music by their peers in the hopes of inspiring musical study and participation in school music programs, and to plant seeds for future enjoyment of classical music. Following the performances, there was a Q&A session where CMS students were asked question from “Besides playing music, what do you like to do in your free time?” to “Do you prefer to play in the major or minor keys?” The CMS students did an excellent job answering questions and exposing their peers to classical music! The student musicians included: Sean Byrne, viola (PREP & Thayer), Rebekah Heckler, violin (PREP), Melissa Kirby, soprano (Hartzog), Julia Son, violin (PREP), Emily Zhao, piano (YPCO, Parkin & Hoyer), and Nomin Zolzaya, cello (PREP).
Jonathan Padgett, percussion (Elstner) was accepted into Interlochen Summer Arts Academy .
Tim Padgett, percussion (Elstner & PE) won first place in the multiple percussion solo category atthe Mid-Missouri Percussive Arts Trophy competition on Saturday, March 3 in Lebanon, Missouri.
CMS Alumni, Lindsay Garritson, piano (former student of Zena Ilyashov) has been invited to play for St. Louis Area Music teachers at Steinway Piano Gallery on May 4 at 10 a.m. Lindsay completed her Masters and Artist Diploma at Yale University. Last spring she won second prize at the very prestigious Montreal International Competition. While studying with Ms. Ilyashov at the CMS Lindsay won second prize at MTNA National Junior Piano Competition, was a winner of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, the St. Louis Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition, and the Artist Presentation Competition, just to name a few.
CMS piano faculty member, Nina Ferrigno, will appear in concert on April 22 & April 29 in Boston with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The concerts are part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Community Outreach.

CMS alumnus Andrew (Drew) Thompson has been appointed as the new contrabassoonist with the St. Louis Symphony. While at the CMS, Thompson was a bassoon student of Donita Bauer and an artistic merit scholarship recipient. He participated in the CMS’ Young People’s Symphony and Concert Orchestras and was a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Thompson is currently completing a master of music at the New England Conservatory. He won the 2011 Boston Woodwind Society Competition. Thompson is a graduate of DePaul University in Chicago. While in Chicago, he was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and its outreach-oriented MusiCorps Woodwind Quintet. He has performed as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras in Chicago and Boston. He will replace longtime contrabassoonist Brad Buckley, who will be retiring from the St. Louis Symphony. Thompson’s appointment will begin in the 2012-13 season.
Clayton Harris, percussion (Elstner ) will be playing percussion in the Missouri and New Mexico Ambassadors of Music Tour to Europe this summer.
Menea Vladi Kefalov, piano (Gerassimova) and Ande Siegel won first place in the Elementary Song with Words category of the University of Missouri’s annual state-wide COMP contest for their composition “War”.
Tim Padgett, percussion (Elstner & PE) was accepted into the Juilliard Summer Institute and Eastman Summer Music Festival.
Alexandra Rice, piano (Z. Illyashov) was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2012 St. Louis Young Artist Competition sponsored by the St. Louis Area Music Teachers Association.
Joshua Street, piano (S. Kim & PREP) was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2012 St. Louis Young Artist Competition sponsored by the St. Louis Area Music Teachers Association.
CMS Alumnus, Matt Pankratz, won the Webster University Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. He will be playing Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the orchestra on Sunday, May 6 at 7 p.m. at the CMS Concert Hall. Matt was a piano student of Karl Koester at the CMS and is the son of piano instructor Sue Pankratz.
CMS Summer Composition Intensive Alumnus, Ben Young, has been accepted into the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music in Scoring for Film and Television.
CMS cello instructor, Catherine Lehr Ramos, was a collaborative musician at the North American Saxophone Alliance’s 2012 Biennial Conference at Arizona State University in March. She also gave classes at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
