SBT is all a-"Twitter"

News reports are flying as fast as the tweets this week about the social network Twitter. What started as a research and development project for a California company is now mainstream for millions who use the micro-blogging service to post short, 140 character messages.

"Twitter is another way to connect to our students, our faculty and our alumni all around the world," says Charla Lord, director of communications for The School of Business & Technology and the manager of the School's WebsterU_Biz Twitter account. "We can share school updates, business news items and even the latest on job opportunities or trends in real time putting our followers ahead of the curve."

At Webster, we'd like to know "What are you doing?"

Launch Your Career: Lunch With A Pro

Networking is not about who you know. It's about who knows you. But building a list of contacts or mentors before graduation can be as challenging as a final exam for a college student. That's what prompted SBT's "Lunch With A Pro" program. Once a month, the School brings outstanding students and business professionals together for an informal lunch where learning what businesses want in a new hire is the main entree.

"Lunch With A Pro gives students a chance to ask and have their questions answered by Webster alumni working in careers the coeds hope to enter in the future" says Ron Van Fleet, Director of Alumni Development for the SBT. "In turn, alumni have an opportunity to become engaged with students in a way that brings them closer to their alma mater."

April 15 will come even faster this year for thousands hit hard by the economy. To help those struggling to get their tax return completed correctly and filed on time, the SBT will be offering its services through the IRS program VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).

Trained finance and accounting students under the direction of SBT experts have set up offices at the Old Post Office to help members of the community with free tax return preparation.

"VITA allows us to extend our education and expertise outside of the classroom," says George Slusarz, director of Webster's VITA team. "It gives us the opportunity to help those who need it the most during these tough economic times."

VITA volunteers can help prepare Form 1040s, 2441s, 8812s and Schedule EICs for those families with a total income below $42,000.
