The Globals Arrive in Shanghai!
The Global MBA students made their way to China this week arriving just in time for orientation and a full day of class on Saturday, March 21. Students are adjusting to the fact that in Shanghai, school happens on the weekends as their classmates hold full-time jobs with corporations like Intel, InBev/Anheuser Busch and more. Courses use the city as a living classroom, weaving together excursions, case studies, investigations, lectures, team research and presentations for a full understanding of business in Asia.
Students are also busy soaking in the local culture. They’ve embraced street shopping and are putting their negotiation skills to work to get the best deals. A street corner BBQ stand is already a favorite as is the local breakfast market just off an avenue of hi-rises. As China’s largest and most progressive city, Shanghai is home to more than eight million people. It’s a city of contrasts with hi-rises and street markets occupying the same block, and bamboo scaffolding support the construction of concrete super-highways as preparations continue for the World Expo in 2010.

You Are the Games You Play
As a child growing up in Nigeria, I enjoyed playing ping-pong, but there was one problem: I lost consistently. But from those losses, I gained much. My repeated defeats taught me about resiliency and the willpower to rise above failure. Acclaimed Good To Great author Jim Collins describes it as fallure, a word he coined to describe the willingness to learn from failure, the capacity to reassess and to try again. Fallure means we do not allow mistakes to define us and instead seek ways to rise above challenges and disappointment.
