21st Century Summer School:
Webster Offers Hybrid Courses to Combine Online Learning with International Travel

The days of sitting in a summer school classroom on a beautiful, sunny day may finally be over. Webster University's School of Business and Technology is using technology and travel to give summer learning a whole new look.

This summer, Webster is offering three hybrid courses that combine online graduate coursework with an international study tour that takes students to Geneva, London or China. The courses are open to current graduate students, alumni or anyone interested in enrolling in this unique learning experience.

"This is a whole new dimension in distance learning," said Benjamin Ola. Akande, dean of Webster University's School of Business and Technology.   "Global commerce has become a reality of our modern world. These hybrid courses provide an excellent and convenient way for students to acquire a solid foundation in how different economies work around the world. By including a week's tour of the overseas market being studied, we are able to expose students first-hand to the concepts and cultures that drive international business."

Course "Issues in International Business: Geneva" runs from May 15-June 30. It focuses on the development of humanitarianism and internationalism as cultural and historical themes in Geneva, Switzerland. Students complete online coursework for six weeks and spend five days on site in Geneva, visiting United Nations agencies (above), as well as other intellectual, political, religious and business centers.

The course "Commerce in China" runs from May 22- June 27, and takes students on a two-week tour of American companies in Shanghai (right) and nearby provinces. This five-week course is designed to help students learn how to do business in this growing economic powerhouse.

The course "Issues in International Business: London" set for July 10-August 25, focuses on the British and European economies and examines how American business is promoted in those markets. A five-day tour of London includes stops at the Bank of England (left) and the British-American Chamber of Commerce.

The cost for all three programs includes $1,620 tuition for three credit hours, plus a program fee ranging from $525 to $1,000. Registration deadlines are:

  • March 31 for the Geneva program
  • April 15 for the China program
  • May 1 for the London program

These courses are ideal for anyone who is interested in international commerce and wants to get a feel for how business is conducted in other markets," said Akande. "By combining the online coursework with an on-site tour, we have created the ultimate learning experience for graduate students this summer."
