Webster University Department of Dance Presents Dynamism

The Webster University Department of Dance will present Dynamism at 8pm on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 in the Jean and Wells Hobler Center for Dance. Dynamism is senior dance major Ashley McQueen’s culminating choreographic concert and will include athletic contemporary movement, acrobatic site-specific dance, and live musicians. The performance is open to the public and admission is free.

Ashley McQueen, originally from Montgomery, Alabama, began her training with the Alabama Dance Theatre, and spent two years at Birmingham-Southern College before transferring to Webster University in 2011. While at Birmingham-Southern, Ashley received the Fine Arts Society Award for Excellence in Dance and Faculty Dance Honors Award for Choreography in 2011. She has spent her summers training with the American Ballet Theater, Alabama Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Group, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Common Thread Contemporary Dance Company.

“Ashley is a passionate, gifted young dancer and choreographer,” says Webster University assistant professor of dance James Robey. “We were proud to have her work, Angere, represent the university at the American College Dance Festival Association’s Regional Concert in Cape Girardeau this past month.”

Angere, which is one of six works to be presented in the upcoming concert, follows a group of five women as they revolve around a single character struggling with anxiety.

“In the central character, I was exploring the idea of being confined within one’s own mind,” says McQueen. “Thoughts and emotions are symbolized by the remaining five dancers, as they trap this character in the space and draw her into their world, creating a dramatic struggle between a character’s inner peace and anxiety.”

As an aspiring choreographer, Ashley has created multiple works, including three selected for performance at the Southeast Regional Ballet Association Festival. She set works on Southern Danceworks and the Arova Contemporary Ballet, where she danced professionally for a season in 2011. She received the Monticello Award and full tuition scholarship to attend the National Choreography Intensive, once as a dancer in 2008 and once as a choreographer in 2012; as well as a scholarship to the Glenda Brown Choreography Project. After studying dance in Thailand this upcoming summer, Ms. McQueen will be graduating in August with a bachelor of fine arts degree in dance with a ballet emphasis. Upon graduation, Ashley will be performing with Common Thread Contemporary Dance Company.
