Webster University Big Band Concert: “Mingus Mingus Mingus! 30 Years Later”
Featuring Jazz Compositions by Charles Mingus (1922-1979)What/Who:
The Webster University Big Band, under the direction of James A. Martin, will perform a concert of Big Band compositions from one of the most important figures in the twentieth century, Charles Mingus. A virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer, Mingus developed an immediately recognizable style which combined all styles of music for his soloists.
The concert’s repertoire will include “Nostalgia in Times Square,” “Goodbye Porkpie Hat,” “Sue’s Changes,” “Original Fables of Faubus” and “Haitian Fight Song.”
The Webster University Mini Big Band, under the direction of Christopher Braig, performs new arrangements by the members of the group in “Power” by Marcus Miller and an original composition by current Webster University music student Justin Straight.
