Student  Composers Invited to Enter Competition

    WHAT:

Student composers, ages 12-21, are invited to submit their original compositons to the Community Music School of Webster University’s Young Composers Competition, sponsored by Arden and Harry Fisher.  The competition recognizes and encourages students involved in composing their own music, one of the most significant and yet most neglected aspects of music education.  Winners are selected in two categories:  Level I for students ages 12-16, and Level II for students ages 17-21.

The winning compositions will be performed by professional musicians from the Saint Louis area in a public concert, Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m.  The  concert will include an interactive presentation by Dr. Chen Yi, internationally renowned composer and recipient of the prestigious Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In addition to a live performance of their works, the students will receive a CD recording of their compositions and will meet personally with Professor Chen.   All entrants are invited to a free Composition Workshop with CMS and Webster Music Department Faculty on Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m.

    WHEN:

Entry forms and compositions must be submitted and postmarked by February 20, 2009.

    WHERE:

Concert and Workshop will be held at the CMS Concert Hall/Building on the Webster University campus, 535 Garden Avenue, St. Louis, MO  63119
