LOCAL STUDENT MUSICIAN TO APPEAR ON NPR’S FROM THE TOP ON ST. LOUIS PUBLIC RADIO
French horn player, Shelby Nugent, recent Alumna of the Preparatory Program (PREP) of the Community Music School of Webster University will appear on a national broadcast of From the Top on NPR, the preeminent showcase for America’s best young classical musicians, hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley. The episode will air locally on St. Louis Public Radio (90.7) on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 7 p.m. From the Top’s 2011-12 National Tour was sponsored by U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management.
What began as a radio experiment in 2000 quickly became one of the fastest growing and most popular weekly classical music programs on public radio. Broadcast on over 200 stations nationwide to an audience of nearly 700,000 listeners each week, From the Top has been described by the Boston Globe as, “an entertaining, accessible and inspirational mix of outstanding musical performances, informal interviews, skits and games; the show is a celebration of extraordinary musicians who happen to be teenagers leading fairly normal lives.” Learn more at www.fromthetop.org.
Shelby Nugent, French horn, from Waterloo, IL, recently won second place at the International Horn Society Premier Soloist Competition in Denton, Texas. Shelby was one of five finalists that competed at the international competition in May 2012. She is currently a freshman at Northwestern University, where she is studying music performance. Shelby performed “Movement I: Massig beweg” from the Sonata for Horn and Piano by Paul Hindemith on From the Top.
The Community Music School’s Preparatory Program is for gifted high school music students who anticipate pursuing a career in music. The program’s excellence has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts with three grants. PREP Artistic Director and Founder Vera Parkin was named the St. Louis Symphony Educator of the Year for 2011.
