What:
8/ 31 - LA JETÉE
Marker’s most famous film, La Jetée is also one of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made, a tale of time travel told in still images. (1962, France, 28 min)
9/ 1 - BESTIARY
Five short films featuring animals, that in Chris Marker's films often function as cultural or political metaphors ("A cat is never on the side of power," Marker has explained). In this anthology of short films, however, Marker avoids the commercial cinema's tendency to anthropomorphize animals in favor of a simple celebration of their exotic beauty, primal nature and mystery. (1990, France, 19 min.)
9/2 - THE CASE OF THE GRINNING CAT
Reflections on French and international politics, art and culture at the start of the new millennium. In November 2001, the filmmaker became intrigued, as did many other Parisians, by the sudden appearance of alluring portraits of grinning yellow cats on buildings, Metro walls and other public surfaces. Marker's cinematic efforts to document the mysterious materializations of this charming feline throughout Paris are a recurring theme. (2006, France, 58 min.)
