The Webster University Symphony Orchestra Presents a Concert Representing the Music of "Heroes and Destiny"
What/Who:
The Webster University Symphony Orchestra (WUSO) presents a concert representing the music of “Heroes and Destiny.” with selections by Verdi, Ravel and Beethoven. Under the baton of conductor, Paul G. Davis, the WUSO will present a program of stirring classical music.
The concert opens with Verdi’s “Overture to La forza del Destino (The force of destiny).” This popular overture has long stood as a staple of the symphonic repertoire. The featured symphony is Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major.” Also known as the “Eroica,” or “Heroic” symphony, the composition is a landmark work, being the first to show Beethoven’s penchant to write unprecedented large scale works of emotional depth and structural rigor.
Two guest artists will be featured with the WUSO. Mezzo-soprano Martha J. Hart is new to the faculty at Webster University. Known for her stylistic interpretation of music spanning the Baroque to the contemporary, Ms. Hart has sung to critical acclaim throughout North America and France. Ms. Hart has performed under conductors such as Helmuth Rilling, Simon Preston, Craig Jessop and the late Robert Shaw. With Ms. Hart, the WUSO will perform Ravel’s “Cinq melodies populaires Grecques.” Also performing on the program is the 2011 Young Artist Award Winner, cellist Daniel Kopp. Mr. Kopp is a graduate of Ladue High School, and is currently a freshman at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Mr. Kopp will perform the Saint-Säens “Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor."
