What/Who:

The Webster University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of James A. Martin, performs music from Russia, Canada and Korea.The Uzbek March and Dancing Song (1932) by Aram Khachaturian were written when he was still a student at the Moscow Conservatory and capture the rich color from the heartland of Central Asia.

In 1993 Louis Applebaum re-orchestrated his 1953 Suite of Miniature Dances (originally for seven musicians from a production of Shakespeare's "All's Well That Ends Well" at the Stratford Festival in Ontario) for full wind ensemble in a sparkling transformation.

The program concludes with a modern classic: Variation on a Korean Folk Song (1967) by John Barnes Chance. The piece is a set of variations on the Korean folk song Arirang, which the composer heard while serving in the U. S. Army in the late 1950s.

The Webster University Women's Chorus, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Choir, Webster University's largest choral ensemble, will present "Notes of Comfort: Music for all Victims of Terror." The program includes a 15th-Century Sephardic wedding song arranged by Mack Wilberg, a late Renaissance motet by Flemish composer Orlandus Lassus, Franz Schubert's uplifting Magnificat, D. 486 for chorus and orchestra, an elegy by American composer Dan Forrest, and a rendition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's poignant Ave Verum Corpus.
