NURS 3410: Family Health Promotion

Course Description

This course focuses on characteristics of families. Family theories are explored. Students examine variables that influence the health of families. Students conduct a family assessment, identify strengths and health concerns, and develop a plan for family health promotion activities. BSN Program Outcomes evaluated in the course: oral and written.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Describe how nursing approaches for working with families differ from those used with individuals.
Discuss theories and research relevant to family nursing.
Explore factors influencing families' health at different stages of development.
Describe influences of culture, spirituality, beliefs and values on the health of families.
Explore ethical principles related to care of families.
Examine the relationship between health status and family functioning.
Describe nursing interventions to promote the health of families in different life stages.
Discuss the impact of transitions on families.
Recognize the impact of genetics/genomics on families.

Prerequisites

Admission into the BSN program is required to take any nursing course.NURS 3010, NURS 3020, NURS 3030, and NURS 3270.

Course Activities

The course will be conducted entirely online. Students are expected to participate in all course activities as assigned by the instructor. Course activities may include readings, presentations, discussions, a family assessment and health promotion presentation, community resource evaluation, and a formal paper and presentation. However, individual instructors may incorporate other activities such as journals and group work into the course materials.

Student Assignments Retained
The College of Arts and Sciences will retain some random student assignments or projects for the purpose of academic assessment as it relates to student learning outcomes.
