||Tough discussions in a safe environment!
Niki Femmer, Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs
On Monday, September 21, the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs (MCISA) department will host nationally known actor, director, and producer, Tony Plana, to discuss the topic of diversity.
Cuban-born actor, Tony Plana, one of the most recognizable Latino actors of stage and screen, has directed, produced, and starred in more than 60 major films. He is currently one of the stars of the hit ABC show, Ugly Betty. Additionally, he serves as executive art director of the East LA Classic Theatre, where he demonstrates his dedication to serving the Latino community through educational outreach theater programs.
In his presentation, Embracing the Spirit of Multiculturalism, Plana advocates for the recognition of minority contributions to US history, and shares stories from his youth, emphasizing how he embraced education in order to achieve success and was able to make a cultural contribution through his dedication. Celebrating diversity, human values, and tolerance, he encourages audiences to move past the civil rights struggles of the 20th century, and to embrace the complexity of identity in society today.
The MCISA provides various opportunities throughout the school year for students to learn more about diversity and discuss tough topics in a safe environment. From off the cuff discussions in the Multicultural Center lounge to organized diversity workshops with student leaders, the MCISA promotes the discussion of diversity across campus. As part of the college experience, we encourage our students to learn more about the world around them by starting with the people they interact with on campus. So the next time your son or daughter comes home, encourage the discussion around diversity by asking them more about the students they’ve met from around the world, or encourage them to attend Tony Plana’s lecture – you might just learn something too!
