On-Campus Housing for Next Year:
Webster Village Apartments are the Only Option for Sophomores

by Holland Saltsman

At the present time, we have only one on-campus living option for sophomores -- the Webster Village Apartments. Since the apartments in Webster Village are in high demand, we utilize a lottery for students who currently reside on campus as first-year students, to determine who will get an apartment for their sophomore year. Applications for the lottery drawing were due 2/11/05 and the lottery was conducted the week of February 14th. Information about the lottery process was sent to all Residence Hall students before the Winter Holiday break and a reminder was sent in early February.

As usual, we experienced a record number of applications this year, so many students were not immediately assigned a space in an apartment due to limited availability. If they applied, they should receive a letter during the week of February 21 stating whether or not they have an apartment space being held for them or if they are on the waiting list. Please check with your son or daughter to verify their current status.

In prior years, we have been able to accommodate everyone who remains on the waiting list if they are patient and flexible in regards to space and roommates. Why is this? A number of students who currently reside in the apartments will cancel their lease due to changes in plans and some students will remove themselves from the waiting list over the course of the semester.

For the first round of assignments, leases will be distributed on March 1, 2005 and are due Monday, March 21st by 5:00 p.m. to secure their space. Rate information will be printed on the leases. For those on the waiting list that receive a lease later in the semester, it will be accompanied with a letter that clearly states the due date. Those not meeting the deadlines will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list. Once the lease is signed and turned in, financial penalties will apply if the student wants to cancel his/her lease. This ranges from forfeiting security deposit up to and including one month’s rent, so it is essential that students make decisions early in regards to housing. Rates for this year can be found on-line at http://www.webster.edu/studlife/reslife/rate.htm

Housing on campus is extremely limited, so please make sure your son/daughter completes all the necessary paperwork and is mindful of all deadlines. We also have a comprehensive list of off-campus apartments in the area should your son or daughter want to pick one up from our office. Please do not hesitate to call managing director Holland Saltsman at 314.968.5920 if you have any questions.
