MINUTES OF THE DOGTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

August 9, 2003

The Dogtown Historical Society meeting was held on August 9, 2003 at St. James The Greater Rectory.
Treasurer Jim Glaser called the meeting to order at 10;03 AM with nine people in attendance.
Bob Corbett, Jim Glaser, Henry Herbst, Tom Leonartson, Bill and Gerry Miller, Sally Sharamitaro, and two guests Mildred Hefele and Betty Hodapp.

Minutes were read by Sally Sharamitaro. One correction was proposed. The correction is an added paragraph to the Speaker Series Committee report for July 2003. A vote was taken and the majority voted to approve the correction. The added paragraph is:

Bob Corbett worked his magic again. Like a skilled artisan, he was able to bring history to life for us. He talked with animation about the history of the church, its name, the school, and the different pastors and priests that were influential in one way or another to St. James the Greater Parish. Bob has been extremely generous in sharing his energy, knowledge, expertise, and dedication and we hope he knows how grateful we are to him for all he has done for Dogtown.

Treasurer's Report

Jim Glaser reported that there is $2,674.80 in the checking account.

General Business

• Century Home Report
  
  Bob Corbett presented the Century Home Plaque with the paper copy of changes from the Tile Library Co, in Webster Groves, Mo. The new changes did not meet expectations exactly. They were drawn by a sales person, not by a graphic artist.
  
  Bob made a motion, seconded by Tom Leonartson, that the Dogtown Historical Society approve the plaque as is with the proposed changes and with the wording to stay the same.
  
  Discussion followed and a vote was taken, the motion passed.
  
  Bob explained the various options used in mounting the plaque. Those options include a saw-tooth type hangar, corner rings that could be fastened with screws to the house, the tile plaque could be glued to a concrete board fastened to the house. The option will be decided by the resident and material used on the outside of the house. 300 homes have been identified as Century Homes, and a letter will be sent to all of them
  
  Another motion was presented to the members by Bob Corbett, seconded by Bill Miller, that the Century Home Committee be empowered to charge $7.00 to $10.00 Above the cost to the Dogtown Historical Society for each plaque.
  
  Discussion followed, and Henry Herbst asked if the Society would be jeopardizing the 501C3 if they made a profit on the Century Home Plaques Bob Corbett stated that he has had any problem in the past with his own non profit organization doing much the same thing.
  
  A vote was taken, the motion passed.
  
  Another question was asked about the printing of the plaques and if pre-printing was a possibility. Pre-printing a number according to the date the home was built; ie.,1900, 1901,etc. Bob Corbett Stated that he would be calling the contact person at the Tile Company and would report back to the committee on that at the next meeting.
  
  
• Speakers Series Committee
  
  Sally Sharamitaro reported that on July 31, 2003, she and Bob Corbett interviewed Julie Duane, our guest artist for the September 21, 2003 event.
  
  Julie told stories about her life, and how she discovered her poetry and music talents. The program was discussed. Bob will act as MC and will introduce Julie and her poems and songs. It is possible that Julie’s long time musical partner Andy Mensel, will perform a song or two with her that evening. They have been a team for 27 years.
  
  Preparations are under way for the September event, a press release and a biography will be written and distributed to the radio and TV stations in the area as well as all Points of Contact. As the time gets closer, help will be needed bring items from Julie’s home to the school, ie., microphone and sound equipment, and some of Julie’s paintings and possibly some of her publicity photographs.
  
  No meeting of the Speaker Series was held in July.

• Other Business
  
  Bob Corbett offered the idea that a book be published on St. James Parish. There would be time to plan and prepare as the 150 anniversary of the Parish is not until 2010. He stated that there are two possibilities. One is 40-50 page book and the other option is a larger book. Bob said he would like to propose an idea for a money raising project that would help fund the book/books. He would send the proposal to Fether Johnson, for his consideration and approval. The project itself would involve the purchase of bricks with the names of Dogtown notables. There could be a certain areas of sidewalk around the church with bricks devoted to specific groups, the priest, nuns, athletes, and parishioners.
  
  Henry Herbst told the group about a Historical Society that was pre-sold and eventually paid for itself. He offered that as a suggestion for the St. James book also.
