CALL TO ORDER – President John Corbett called the meeting to order at 10:09 a.m. at the home of Jerry and Theresa Weisbrod at 6525 Wise Avenue, St. Louis, MO. Eleven members were in attendance; Bob Corbett, John Corbett, Lucy Corbett, Tom Corbett, Rose Kennedy, Bill Miller, Gerry Miller, Carol Nemeth, Scott Ogilvie, Sally Sharamitaro and Joe Weisbrod.
Meeting Minutes - A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the July 9, 2011 meeting. A vote was taken, the motion passed and the minutes were approved.Veteran’s Memorial Project – – John discussed Phase II of the “Brick Garden” project.
He also explained how he plans to make a final decision for the brick installation, from the bids he has received and those he will receive. John then discussed why he would like to form a Veteran’s Committee, for decisions on the qualification for each application the DHS receives for a memorial brick. The three members whose names were submitted, and approved, for the Veteran’s Committee are: Norm Merlotti, Tom Lohman and Tom Haller.Street Musicians Festival 2011 - John handed out copies of
Historian/Archivist – - DHS Historian, Bob Corbett discussed the uploading of the St. James Parish Bulletins “Let’s Go’s” from 1925 to July 1932 and the progress he is making.
He explained the history of the bulletins and how his interview with Joe Boman resulted in his receiving a full copy. He told how he eventually xeroxed each page as 8.5 x 11 (they were originally 5 x 7) and how he then realized that he had a total of 1158 pages. Each of those 1158 pages would need to be scanned as text and then encoded to be uploaded as a webpage. During this uploading of each month’s issues, he found that one issue was missing (March 1930). Bob wonders if the missing issue may have been the one in which Joe Boman’s father’s death was reported. It was Mrs. Boman, his mother, who took on the job of typing each and every issue. So far no one has come forward to say that they have a copy of the missing issue. Bob views these bulletins as an amazing history of the neighborhood as well as being St. James the Greater parish bulletins. Bob then took the opportunity to invite the members to look through their family photos and if possible share any that would add to Dogtown history in pictures. And as they join family at holiday time, they might bring forward memories and stories, which would also be welcome.OTHER BUSINESS –
John shared more information on the Dogtown Civil War Veteran, Thomas Card. He told how a fireman friend of his mentioned “Billy Goat Hill” as they talked about the Veteran’s Memorial in Carlinville, Illinois and how John planned to create one in Dogtown. The friend shared the story of his grandfather Thomas Card, who was a drummer boy in the Civil War, and that he had lived in Dogtown. This friend of John’s said that he would search his family history files for photos and papers that he had from his grandfather.
