MINUTES OF THE DOGTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
January 8, 2005


CALL TO ORDER: Vice President Virginia Lopez, in the absence of President John Corbett who is recovering from an automobile accident, called the meeting of The Dogtown Historical Society (DHS) to order at 10:10 a.m. at the St. James Rectory. Twelve people were in attendance: Nina Bryans, Bob Corbett, Didi Gardner, JoAnn Emmerich, Tom Haller, Henry Herbst, Machelle Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Tom Lenartson, Bill Miller, Gerry Miller, Virginia Lopez, and Sally Sharamitaro.

Minutes of Last Meeting - NMINUTES of the November meeting were read by Sally Sharamitaro. There were no corrections. Minutes were approved as read.

Nina Bryans will give Bob Corbett the name of the contact person at Missouri Historical Society (MHS). Bob has not received the digital images of the Muegge paintings as promised by the MHS.

Treasurer’s Report -Treasurer, Didi Gardner, gave the year end treasurer’s report. The ending balance was $4024.53, after expenses it was $3681.76.

Didi explained that because their were two returned checks in the past several months, she wanted to open a discussion of how the DHS might somehow recover the amount charged by the bank for returned checks. Following the discussion, a motion was made that the DHS charge a $10.00 fee on all future returned checks. A vote was held and the motion passed.

GENERAL BUSINESS
  1. Speakers Series Committee – Sally Sharamitaro reported on the tentative 2005 Speaker Series Schedule.

    The scheduled dates have been approved by Bill Kennebeck at St. James School. These dates for 2005 are: February 20th; May 22nd; July 17th and October 16th.

    The February 20, 2005 Event will be “Letters from Dogtown”. The program will include readings from two historical sources on Dogtown (with small bits of commentary added) Bob Corbett will do the readings and commentary.

    The first half of the evening will be readings of Father P.J. O’Connor’s essays on social justice during the Depression. These essays grow out of the shock and dismay he felt at the suffering of his parishioners. The essays are well constructed and heart felt.

    The second part of the evening, following the intermission, will be readings from the recently published book “Letters from Dogtown” written by Dogtown resident, Helen Scherzinger. She wrote a long series of letters to her daughter, Alice, who was working in a law office in Washington D.C. during World War II.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

After a year’s negotiation with the Missouri Historical Society, photographs of the original Albert Muegee paintings have been acquired for the Dogtown Historical Society through the generosity of Duke McVey and Nina Bryans and were on display at the meeting. Albert Muegee is the son of August Muegee, both were portrayed in the recent DHS Civil War reenactment.

    The photos, listed below, show scenes of Cheltenham during the 1870’s. The titles on the picures are:

  2. Muegge’s Oil Cloth and Window Shade Factory
  3. Our Home in Cheltenham (Muegge Home)
  4. Landscape of the area to the north past the railroad tracks
  5. Landscape of the area west of Cheltenham and Benton

Meeting adjourned 10:50 a.m. Next meeting will be December 11, 2004 at 10:00am in St. James Rectory, 6401 Wade Avenue.
