1900 FEDERAL CENSUS OF CHELTENHAM/DOGTOWN: HOW TO USE AND WHAT'S THERE

This census is available for free use on microfilm at the Missouri Historical Society research facility on Skinker Blvd., and at the St. Louis City Library, Main branch on Olive. At Missouri Historical Society where I've been working, it is in the microfilm room for the 1900 Federal Census. It is reel 899, for the 24th ward. The data for Cheltenham/Dogtown is limited to enumeration districts 365, 366, 367, 368 and part of 370, but none in 360.

I have not included all the data available in my report. However, I have given the enumeration district and page number. This should make it extremely easy to locate any record and get further data. Note that for page numbers there is an A and B. Each page has 100 people. The A page has #s 1-50 and page B has the numbers 51-100

I have presented six charts. Three are sorted by the last name and then by address rather than first name. In this way everyone living at a certain address and sharing a last name will be lumped together. This will make it much easier to figure out who was living together in family. In the second set of three second charts I sort the data by street name and address. This will make it easy for people to search their own house and see who their ancestors' neighbors were

The data available in the full census is:

Lastly at the end of the line in the chart below is data about the person in Gould's City Directory. Gould's directory is a book sort of like a phone book and it lists most working adults and some non-working ones. I have included data on whether the person was listed in Gould's for the years 1899, 1900 and 1901 ONLY FOR the address given in the census. I have at times indicated the earliest and latest date I found them at that address in Goulds AT THE CENSUS ADDRESS. The Goulds directories are availale at both Missouri Historical Society and the St. Louis City Public Library Main Branch. They are extremely useful to discover where people were living in any given year.
