BROCKSCHMITT BROTHERS BRICK COMPANY

May, 1904, p. 221.

Leaving the Fernholtz plant and resuming our journey on the Market St. car, we ask for a transfer on the Suburban line and this takes us the whole length of the first group of plants, depositing us at the farthest one, the Missouri Fire Brick Co. This is the first of the important plants on our journey of investigation of this group. On the other side of the road, however, a little further down is the small dry press plant operated by Brockschmitt Bros.

Notes from Bob Corbett:

In the St. Louis City Directories the plant first appears under the name of Herman Brockschmitt in 1888. Herman continues to be the owner until at least 1893 when he is listed as living at 6440 Dale. However, by 1904 it is Brockschmitt Brothers (John and Edward) and Eliza is living at 6440 Dale, listed as the widow of Herman.

In 1907 Edward is listed as the owner and it is Brockschmitt Brick Yard and Quarry.

1909 must have been the transition year. In the residential section of the City Directory Edward is listed as the owner of Brockschmitt Quarry and living in Maplewood, where he continues to live for a while. However, in the business section of the directory it is still listed as Brockschmitt Brick Yard.

By 1910 there is no further mention of the brick yard portion of the business. However, the quarry continued on for many years.
