DOGTOWN RESIDENT ART SCHMITZ BOXING IN ALASKA IN 1940

Fairbanks Daily New-Miner. August 15, 1940

Special thanks to Art's wife, Mary Gruner Schmitz, (St. James class of 1935), for the copy of the newspaper and the following note:

"Fred Walden had been in Fairbanks working and had come home for a visit -- family lived on Clayton Ave. between Louisville and Kraft. Art was a friend of Fred's brother, Bob. When Fred was returning to Fairbanks the summer of 1940 Art went with him and worked in the gold fields. He also pitched softball because the sun doesn't set in the summer."

Obviously from the newspaper story, he also was doing some boxing!
