This is a call to news agencies and especially to weather
reporters to correct their map of the Caribbean.
The Island which is shared by the Republic of Haiti and
the Dominican Republic was first named Haiti by the Arrawaks,
the arborigens of the Caribbean. When the Spaniards conquered the island and found some
ressemblance with Spain, they called it Espanola or little
Spain.
The island never became entirely a Spanish colony, its western
part was occupied by buccaneers and filibusters of French and
English Origin and became the French colony of Saint-Domingue.
When Dessalines chased the French from Saint-Domingue the new
republic acquired its former name of Haiti.
Now that colonialism is over in the island it is more than fair
that Haiti should be reinstated as the name of the island where
Haitians and Dominicans live.
May the News networks and the weather reporters revise their
Caribbean map and refer to the island as Haiti and not as
Espanola or Hispaniola.
