261762: Wilcken (reply) 26164: RE: Davis on Katrina and Haitians (fwd)

From: Lois Wilcken <makandal-ny@juno.com>

Frisner Augustin and I have been doing workshops in New Orleans in the past
couple of years and had been developing some longer-range plans for research
and education. What we find as far as Haitian population goes is
individuals but no community, as we understand the word in New York, Miami,
etc. Undoubtedly, New Orleans is home to many Haitian descendants, but many
are likely unaware of it. All to say that in the apparent absence of
community organizations, it will be difficult to identify and gather
survivors.

We are particularly concerned about artist Vidho Lorville and radio
programmer Maryse Dejean (WWOZ), because we have not yet been able to
contact them. If anyone has word of either, please let me know. If anyone
can organize a Haitian relief effort from New Orleans, it would be Maryse.
