#187: For further research on Kreyol (fwd)

From: Emmanuel W. Vedrine <evedrine@hotmail.com>

"Note to open discussion for further research on HC"
(E. W. Védrine)

* ARTICLES, written DOCUMENTS on the "HC orthography". [One of these major
documents, "Comment écrire le créole d'Haiti". author: Yves Dejean - Ph.D
dissertation in French Linguistics . Indiana University. 1977 (under the
direction of Professor Albert Valdman)]

* BIBLIOGRAPHIES - (Some bibliographic research on Creole Studies and on
Kreyol [Some authors: John Reinecke, Albert Valdman, Jean-Pierre Jardel,
Emmanuel W. Védrine...]) - visit web page http://windowsonhaiti.com (section
"E. W. Védrine", "A Short Bibliography Of Dissertations  Related To Haiti";
another work completed "DICTIONARY OF HAITIAN CREOLE BIBLIOGRAPHY",A review
of publications on Haitian Creole from colonial times to 1999 [approved for
publication], author: Emmanuel W. Védrine

Tel. (514) 845-0880; Fax: 845-6218
e-mail: edition@cidihca.com

- The importance of CIDIHCA as the largest Haitian-Canadian
research/resource center/publisher holdings all kinds of important documents
related to Haiti, the Caribbean (mostly), including many documents on Kreyol
(such as journals with articles on/in Kreyol in 3 major languages(English,
Kreyol, French).

can work on a Mater, Ph.D

* THE EXISTENCE OF "R" (French influence) IN SOME KREYOLIZED WORDS (used
more by bilingual speakers of HC.[e.g "chèrchè"]; one would seldom hear)

"chèchè". s: fouyadò (> 'fouye' [s: dige, djige]), researcher; investigator

* IMPORTANCE FOR A CONFERENCE where all Haitian linguists (from Haiti and
the Diaspora) should be present at the table (in Miami) to discuss "the
importance of standardizing Kreyol" in order to open more doors on research,
literacy and writing in the Kreyol language in Haiti.

* KREYOL NEWSPAPERS (need for a daily or weekly Kreyol newspaper)

- When will the Haitian government encourage the existence of a daily or
weekly Kreyol newspaper?

- "Bon Nouvèl" (the only non-stop Kreyol paper since 1967). Current
director: Jean Hoet (from Belgium)

- Importance of publishing research in Kreyol (through newspapers)

* JOURNALISTS WHO ARE WRITING KREYOL (with lots of mistakes in published
texts, texts are not properly reviewed before publication,
and are using "kreyol foklorik" (A Kreyol that doesn't represents the way
the people talk)

* WHAT ROLE SHOULD HAITI PLAY IN RESEARCH ON KREYOL?

* CRITICS IN KREYOL, ON KREYOL ("san patipri")[published works]
. What is the background of these people critizing the authors' works?

* HAITIAN LINGUISTS WHO DON'T WRITE JACK IN KREYOL. - Why? Any colonial
influence? (in term of chosen language to write in)

* (So-called)LINGUISTS SPECIALIZING IN KREYOL STUDIES BUT DON'T DO ANY
EFFORT TO SPEAK KREYOL (their target research language)

* FREEDOM IN WRITING KREYOL (e.g graffiti messages in Haiti; ref. "Haiti:
the bad press" (Robert Lawless), songs, titles of published songs (C.D,
tapes), no effort in trying to respect the
'79 orthography.

* "Mo nèf" (new words), when to use them, strategies to make them become
part of Kreyol lexicon. (e.g . "zenglendò" (Keslèbrezo) that later gave
birth to "zenglendo" but also, notice the etymology or (probably) its root
from "zenglen" (a group under Soulouque Administration, equivalent to the
"macoute" under Duvalier's dictatorship). The term "Zenglendo" passed easily
through the Haitian media (e.g popular radios in Port-au-Prince where for
instance journalists such as Liliane Pierre Paul and Sony use these terms).

* RECOGNIZING THE "oun" sound in some Kreyol words (before a consonant),
e.g. "mazounbèl" vs. "mazonbèl", "oungan" vs. "ougan", "ounsi" vs. "ounsi".
[Kreyol writing samples from members of "Sosyete Koukou" seen as an African
influence (in terms of "nasalisation")]

* REVIEWS (on Kreyol Studies), e.g "Etudes Créoles" founded by Albert
Valdman, "Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages" and more... with
linguistic research on Kreyol (Historical, Socio-linguistics and
Theoretical)

* SEMINARS TO TRAIN MONITORS WHO WILL BE WORKING IN LITERACY PROGRAM
(if Haiti will ever have a real one)

- When are they going to take place?
- Who are going to do them?
- Why should they take place?

* TECHNIQUES TO WRITE 'DICTIONARIES' AND 'GRAMMARS' (based on a corpus'),
e.g, the works of Albert Valdman on dictionaries, A. Bentolila (& als.), J.
Targete & R. Urciolo, and works of some other qualified linguists.

- GRAMMARS (Applied and Theoretical Linguistics)-
"Gramè Kreyòl Védrine" (354 p, 1996) and some publications that cover a
great deal the Kreyol grammar (such as works by Albert Valdman, Jule Faine,
Suzanne Sylvain-Comhaire, McConnel/Laubach, E. Swan, Robert Hall Jr,
Pressoir, Pradel Ponpilus, some members of "Sosyete Koukouy" (e.g, Ernst
Mirville, Emile Celestin-Megie, Jean-Robert Placide, Michel-Ange
Hyppolite...) [samples of published in "Le Petit Samedi Soir" and in "Haiti
en Marche", section "TI Gout Gout Ak Jan Mapou"], Pierre Vernet, Yves
Dejean, Edner Jeanty, Albert Valdman, Alix Renaud, Michel DeGraff, Robert
Fournier, Claire Lefebvre (team work at UQUAM), Kate Howe, Emmanuel W.
Védrine ...

* PROBLEMS WITH SO-CALLED 'LEXICOGRAPHERS'(Haitians and non-Haitians), with
no linguistic training in writing dictionaries.

* THE CREOLE INSTITUTE (Indiana University) - The largest resource center
for Creole Studies (founded by Albert Valdman). N.B: Indiana University is
the first American Institution to teach Kreyol (in the early '60s.

* THE ROLE OF 'MORPHOLOGY' and 'SEMANTICS' in the Kreyol orthography.

e.g (can be been from a diachronic point of view)

'à la mode' ---> alamòd (in style)

'Colon guette' (> v. guetter) ---> kolangèt (tèlke: "Colon guette
ta mère" ---> Kolangèt manman w!, a very strong swearing in Kreyol (F.U!, F.
your mother!)

'faux pas' ---> fopa (lit., bad move) [as in the idiom, "fè fopa"]

'mot d'ordre' ---> modòd (lit., approved word, agreement)
