Haitian Advocacy Grassroots Coalition Delegation heading to D.C.

From: Jean-Robert Lafortune
Members of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition Delegation will meet on
Thursday October 14, 1999 with Congressman E. Clay Shaw whose district
covers both Dade and Broward to seek his support for HR-2722, the
bi-partisan legislation which give certain parity to Central Americans and
Haitians under the NACARA legislation. [October 14, 1999, 3:30 PM, 2408
Rayburn Office Building].

Meetings with other leaders from the Republican and Democratic Parties are
being planned as well to advocate for HR-1485, Family Reunification Act of
1999 (Fix 1996). HR-2125 (general amnesty bill), and HR-2722 (bill to
amend NACARA to include Haitians).

Since Sunday October 3rd, 1999, the Miami Haitian Community, under the
guidance of the Grassroots Coalition, is mobilizing its resources to send
several motor coach buses to Washington D.C. to participate in two major
rallies to protest against the 1996 IIRAIRA Law enacted by the U.S.
Congress in 1996. The INS officers implementing this law have been
targeting specifically poor immigrants from the Caribbean, Central, North,
and South America, and Africans. In Miami, it has been open season
specifically on Haitian immigrants.

The first rally (Fix 1996) will take place on Thursday, October 14, 1999 at
1:30 PM at the West Wing of the Capitol. As the rally goes on, the
Grassroots Coalition delegation will visit several members of the U.S.
Congress to ask for a repeal of the legislation which is impacting
negatively on the immigrant population.

The other rally is scheduled for Saturday, October 16, 1999 at the Malcolm
X Parc in Washington D.C. at 10:00 A.M. Over 100,000 protesters coming
from every where in the Continental U.S. are expected to be present to ask
Congress to pass a general amnesty for all immigrants regardless of their
country of origin.
