#757: Haitian archives and genealogy (fwd)

From: LeGrace Benson <legracebenson@clarityconnect.com>
>Dear M. Viard: I beleive the materials you seek will be found at the
De'po^t des ARchives d'outre-mer
29, chemin du Moulin-d-Testas
13090 Aix-en-Provence
France.    Tel (in 1988) (42)26.43.21
The works of G. Debien are there (with additional references to follow up);
a great many documents and the collected writings of Moreau de St.-Mery,
and many, many documents from the civil state, the notariat, the griffes,
and various indemnification papers. If you are looking for baptismal
records, some can be found in the collected documents of missionary houses,
the mother house of most of these being now in Rome or Vatican City.
Once tyou know a Haitian parish locality, you can then find out which group
of missionaries were in charge, hence, which Mother House may have
records. I hope this information is helpful.

Second matter: Your catalogue arrive in late September, and I am just now
able to open it as I have been traveling on family concerns until this
week. I shall look with care later this week. Thank you for sending it.
Regards, LeGrace Benson
