#4057: Miami Herald FWD - Editorial by Olivier Nadal: Grey comments on Cantave's letter

From:Racine125@aol.com

In a message dated 6/3/2000 10:16:24 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Alix Cantave
<alix.cantave@umb.edu writes:

<< The opposition has no other discourse and has articulated no other other
issues other than its opposition to one personality-- Jean-Bertrand
Aristide.>>

It's true! It's like they think he can grow horns in broad daylight or
something. :-)

<<If the opposition wants to play a leadership role, it must ... know when to
concede and allow the wining party to govern.>>

LOL! That's putting it very politely, Alix! But what has Nadal told us he
wants to do with Aristide? "Remove him from power". Same old same old, and
they are not going to change.

<<Generally, it must move away from the strategy of character assassination
and focus on issues...>>

They ca't, Alix! If they focus on issues, they will indict themselves! Who
is responsible for the total lack of an effective system of public education
in Haiti, for one example? Gee, I suppose it must be the people who have
been in charge for the past generation or two, right? Who is responsible for
the myriad miseries of Haitian life, if not the architects of that society,
the vaunted elite?

These are the same individuals who told me personally, Alix, that it doesn't
matter of most Haitians voted for Aristide since most Haitians can not read
and therefore don't know what they want!

The arrogance of the elite class can not be underestimated. I wonder if Mr.
Nadal remembers a day, in the period prior to the American presidential
elections which brought Bill Clinton to office, when he asserted that George
Bush would be the next president of the United States. An American present
pointed out to Mr. Nadal that elections had not yet been held, and thus the
identity of the next American president remained open to question.

"Oh, don't be so naive," was Nadal's comment. "It has already been decided."

This mistaken belief that a society can be governed by powerful individuals
unsupported by the will of the people and without an electoral mandate
underlies Nadal's thinking and remains the most basic flaw of his soi-disant
political perspective.

Peace and love,
