  Clinton admonishes Haiti's new president
From the newsroom of the BBC World Service

President Clinton has written to the president-elect of Haiti,
Jean-Bertrand Aristide, calling for firm action to restore confidence
in the country's democracy. The United States embassy in
Port-au-Prince, said Mr Clinton urged the authorities to address what
he described as well-documented election irregularities which he said
called into question Haiti's commitment to democracy. Parliamentary
voting earlier this year was marred by allegations of irregularities
and in response, the opposition boycotted
presidential elections last month in which Mr Aristide was re-elected.

Correspondents say that without action from Mr Aristide, Haiti faces
further international isolation and little help for its
poverty-stricken population.
