Haitian sports journalist shot to death

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Dec 18 (Reuters) - A sports journalist was shot to death as
he got out of a taxi in a rundown area of the Haitian capital, the U.S.
Embassy and his employers said on Monday.

Gerard Denoze, who covered sports for Radio Plus, was shot by two young men
after he paid his cab fare in the Carrefour area on Friday afternoon, embassy
officials said.

Denoze, 34, who was from Moron in Haiti's Grand Anse department, lived in
Carrefour and was on his way home when he was killed with a 9 mm handgun,
said Jean Lucien Prussien, director of Radio Plus, one of the smaller radio
stations in the capital.

Prussien said Denoze had received threatening phone calls and warnings that
he was going to be killed but the motive for the slaying was unknown.

"I don't know what happened. I don't know why he was killed," Prussien said.

The death of Denoze was the second slaying of a journalist in Haiti this
year. On April 3, Jean Leopold Dominique, a radio commentator who spoke on
the behalf of Haiti's poor and was an adviser to President Rene Preval, was
fatally shot as he went to his station for his morning broadcast.

Political violence escalated in the weeks leading up to Haiti's Nov. 26
presidential election, won by former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Two
children were killed in a series of pipe bombings the week before the vote.
