9361: Re: 9355: "Hayti" in Durham, N.C. (fwd)

From: Edward Baptist <eebaptist@yahoo.com>

Unfortunately, there _used to be_ an area in Durham
known as "Hayti," which was in the early 20th century
one of the most vibrant districts of black-owned
business in the Southeast. But in a typical "urban
renewal" project of the 1960s, the Durham-Raleigh
freeway was laid down right through and over Hayti,
which pretty much destroyed what had been knwon as
Durham's "Black Main Street."
