Soccer-World Cup finalists Ecuador beaten in Gold Cup

MIAMI, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Haiti stunned World Cup finalists Ecuador 2-0 while
Costa Rica were held to a 1-1 draw by Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF
Gold Cup on Sunday.

Haiti, who always draw sizeable support in South Florida, took the lead after
seven minutes with an own goal from Edison Mendez.

Charles Alerte made sure of maximum points with the second goal in first-half
injury time.

The victory kept alive Haiti's chances of reaching the Gold Cup
quarter-finals after they had lost their group D opener to holders Canada on
Friday.

Canada and Ecuador meet in Miami on Tuesday in the final game in the group. A
draw would send Canada and Haiti into the last eight.

Ecuador must win to have any hope of advancing.

Costa Rica seemed to be on the way to clinching first place in group C when
they took a 1-0 lead against Trinidad and Tobago with a 56th minute goal from
Rolando Fonseca.

But a last-minute penalty by Stern John earned Trinidad and Tobago a share of
the spoils.

Trinidad and Tobago were reduced to 10 men when Arnold Dwarika was sent off
in the 66th minute.

Costa Rica are still certain of a place in the quarter- finals. Trinidad and
Tobago will join them as long as they avoid defeat against Martinique in
Miami on Tuesday.

Costa Rica defeated Martinique 2-0 in the opening match of the group on
Friday.
