Port-au-Prince, March 21, 2002 -(AHP)- President Jean Bertrand Aristide
expressed his wish Wednesday that an agreement be reached in the conflict
existing between the banking sector and the Savings and Credit cooperatives.

M. Aristide spoke at the Port-au-Prince International Airport before
traveling to Monterrey (Mexico) where he is expected to participate in a
sonference on financing global development organized by the UN.

The President of the Republic promises to meet with the officials of the
cooperatives when he returns. A meeting has already been organized with the
leaders of the banks to discuss this conflict.

Jean Bertrand Aristide has encouraged the directors of the cooperatives to
organize seminars and radio and television debates to enable the population
to gain a lot more information about the cooperative movement.

The Head of State says he is hoping for progress with respect to the work to
develop a draft law on the functioning of cooperatives throughout the
country.

Dozens of cooperatives from the Initiative of Cooperatives decided at the
beginning of the week to suspend paying special rebates on fixed term
deposits for a period of three months.
