a1481: Jazz night (fwd)

From: J.David <Jedidiah@lyalls.net>

During my winter sojourn in Hayti I attended the friday night jazz session at the Olaffson.
It was so much fun that I went again. Now, haytians use the word 'jazz' to mean dance
music, much like americans did in the 01920's. This is real modern jazz. Bebop.

The band leader plays sax mostly, altho he also does an incredible job with a conch shell,
using his hand in the hole to change the pitch like a trombone. Some fantastic young guitar
players sit in, one of whom plays like wes montogomery. The drummer is a real jazz drummer,
hard to find.

The crowd which attends is the Port au Prince intelligentsia, hardly any foreingers.
Oh, there is a great marioneteer as well.

All in all, it is a wonderful night out. I recommend it whole heartedly.
