a1534: Re: Association of Haitian Journalists

FROM: Kevin Pina kpinbox@hotmail.com

While culling through my research in regards to the question of Ira
Lowenthal, I ran across this information on the Association of Haitian
Journalists which is currently represented by Guyler C. Delva. Does anyone
have any specific information regarding more recent international and/or
USAID funding for this organization?

DEMOCRACY INTERVENTION IN HAITI

5. AHJ (Association of Haitian Journalists) was founded in 1955 and has been
dominated by Duvalierists and a close association with the US Information
Service (USIS) since its inception. It received $25,000 from AID for
election activities, briefly operating a press center, but often has little
money and no obvious means of ongoing financial support.

These (and possibly other) organizations could receive UMU funds for four
types of Institutional /Civil Society Development activity, including:

Free and Independent Media: AHJ could receive funding for journalists
identified by USIS to be trained by consultants identified by USIS, and
possibly for short-term training in the US [emphasis added]. Training would
focus on professional development, standards and ethics.
