a1953: Re: a1948: Arthur agrees that it's a bit absurd (fwd)

Charles Arthur writes:

Must say that I agree with Hyppolite Pierre's remarks (#a1948 Theatre of the
Absurd) about Reporters without Borders and their intention to have President
Aristide put on trial at the International Criminal Court. One wonders if
this non-governmental organisation is not maybe over-reaching itself just a
little. One wonders if RSF is not perhaps more concerned with boosting its
own profile than with supporting journalists in Haiti.

Hyppolite also makes much of his suggestion that human rights violators be
made to pay compensation to their victims. If, as we are lead to belive by
the Haitian media, Prosper Avril has indeed paid off Evans Paul and Serge
Gilles as compensation for having his goons torture them when he was
dictator, that is all very nice, but he should also face a trial and serve
any sentence too, otherwise Hyppolite's fine system would be no deterent to
those rich enough to pay for their crimes with hard cash.
