Top Haitian Bands to Perform at Prospect Park for a Free Concert

BROOKLYN - Some of the top acts in the Haitian music world will grace the
stage at Prospect Park's Bandshell for an all day free concert on Sunday
June 30, 2002. The event, the first Annual Kreyolfest, is being organized
by The Haitian Times, Enigma in association with Western Union and Celebrate
Brooklyn!
"We believe that the Haitian community in New York lacks large events that
highlights our culture," said Garry Pierre-Pierre, editor and publisher of
the Haitian Times. "Kreyolfest aims to rally not only Haitians but
non-Haitians who are interested in our music and food."
>From early afternoon and well into the evening, Tabou Combo, Boukman
Eksperyans, Zin, Emeline Michel, 2Sweet, Djarara will perform a combination
of roots, original Konpa and techno Konpa sound. Revelers will get a chance
to sample Haiti's various regional cuisine as well as its vibrant and
colorful art.
The idea for a free concert of such magnitude is part of the Haitian Times
mission of Bridging the Gap." For too long, Haitian music, which is of high
quality, has remained outside of the world beat music scene. Hopefully,
Kreyolfest will be a catalyst to expose the music to New York City. That is
one of the reasons that Haitian Times partnered with Celebrate Brooklyn!, an
organization that has put together a summer long series of free events at
the park. With Celebrate Brooklyn! expertise in event planning and Haitian
Times reach into the community, Kreyolfest is set to become the biggest
event in New York's Haitian community.
