THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION AND SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR

Subject: The Haitian Revolution in Simone de Beauvoir

I'm always on the look out for any mention of Haiti in literature which is not about Haiti. Currently I'm reading Simone de Beauvoir's classic, THE SECOND SEX. It is interesting that in the introduction she cites Haiti twice as a model of a revolution of slaves against masters (in both the literal and metaphorical sense). Beauvoir celebrates this as one of history's greatest examples of revolution.
