PHIL 2080: TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY. FALL 1999

Below are essays, commentaries, lectures, reports of discussion and related material from my in-class course of Fall 1999. Since this was a sophomore level seminar most of the material assumes little familiarity with philosophical morality. Thus I tend to take more time to define terms and develop related materaials.

• Syllabus for PHIL 2080.01: OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ANIMALS    While this is mainly a classroom course, there will be some informal version of this in a non-credit on-line form. Individulalize credit could be arranged.
• Introduction to the Course: Our Relationship With Animals    Introductory essay for the Fall 1999 version of this course, PHIL 2080: Topics in Philosophy. Among other things this essay sketches the central "schools" of thought concerning our relationship with animals.
• Singer, Peter  SPECIESISM: FROM ANIMAL LIBERATION    Bob Corbett's class notes introducing the notion of "speciesism" from Peter Singer's work and also introducing the general concept of the argument of equality.
• Steinbock, Bonnie"Speciesism and the Idea of Equality.   These are Bob Corbett's comments on the Steinbock essay. In addition this essay pushes Corbett beyond the issue of animals to some larger aspects of moral philosophy.
