FORMING A GROUP AND CHOOSING A COFFEE HOUSE

Each student must be in a three person group (one group of four) and each group must have an approved coffee house on which to do its project.

I will allow groups to self-form and this will be done on first come first serve basis. Any people who wish to work together must send me e-mails at:

When I have received an e-mail from two or more students for the same group, then that group is formed. CAUTION: It will be highly unlikely that once you join or form a group you will be able to change.

Next the group must select a particular coffee house on which their project will focus. Again:

1. First come, first serve, in writing via e-mail.
2. It will be most unlikely you will be able to change after once selecting a coffee house.

Your first meeting with me will be on April 5th, and you must already have done a significant amount of planning and have visited your coffee house at least once. Thus if you have not become a member of a group by April 2nd, then I will assign you to a group. If a group has not chosen a coffee house by April 2nd, then I will assign it. The final list of groups and coffee houses will be handed out in class on Tues. April 3rd, and/or posted to my web site for the course.

TENTATIVE LIST OF COFFEE HOUSES WHICH I RECOMMEND

Below is a list of the coffee houses which I think have the best change of being rich and rewarding project houses. The first group is not in any order of "best" to "worst." Rather, group one all seem highly likely houses. I place them in alphabetic order to emphasize this is not a valued order

• Cafe in the Hotel Imperial
• Cafe Landtmann
• Cafe Museum
• Cafe Schwarzenberg
• Cafe Sperl
• Cafe Weimar
• The Cafes in the old Jewish sector of Leopoldstadt

You are welcome to make your own suggestions and I will listen sympathetically. However, beware: you are looking to do a report on TURN OF THE CENTURY VIENNA'S COFFEE HOUSES, and their impact on Viennese intellectual life. It is crucial that you have a coffee house which will yield a useful and exciting report.
