ST. MICHAEL CEMETERY - Boston Massachusetts see: HISTORY

This page is dedicated to my cousin Rosalie Sharamitaro Kiernan, who so generously shares memories of her grandparents Pietro and Eulalia "Laura" Ciaramitaro.

Note: Rosalie and I work together entirely via email, as she lives in the Boston area while I live in St. Louis, Mo. Ours has been a very successful long-distance team effort.

To better understand this page, a little background might help:

While we were comparing notes, we both wondered where we might obtain copies of the death certificates for Pietro, Joseph and Catarina.

Like most new genealogists, I had focused on finding names, dates and places to add to my "Family Tree Maker" program. So my next step was a review of all the documents I had saved over the years. Success! I was happy to find copies of all three death certificates (see below) in my computer folders!

I emailed copies to Rosalie who was delighted to have them, especially given that all three mentioned the same cemetery.

She wrote back reminding me of her conversations with her mother, which I had already posted on the Pietro Ciaramitaro Family Memory page. This is what she wrote:

I use to talk with my mother a lot and she would tell me a few things. I am just sorry that I didn’t start talking genealogy A LONG TIME AGO.

After we moved to Massachusetts, I use to visit cousins up in Gloucester, MA. And, when my mother and sister, Jeanette, came to visit, we took them to Gloucester to visit relatives. And, as we sat around the kitchen table and ate lobsters, they would tell us about what happened and how they all ended up in Gloucester. Some of the people they talked about, I didn’t know who they were, but my mother did. Then we took my Mom to Fall River to see cousins that she hadn’t seen since she left Boston, at a young age.

I did talk with Sam and Rose Sharamitaro, Josephine Alvernia Barriner's sister, and it was Sam that told me that Grandpa Pietro had died in Boston and was buried in the (Milton, MA) City Cemetery. I told him I was going to the cemetery and visit his grave. Sam said, “oh, no you’re not. The area is not a very good area. I don’t want you anywhere near there.” He scared the daylights out of me and I dropped it. I always thought I would look into it a little more, but never did. Sorry. I do not have a death certificate. Grandma Laura must have received his death certificate and I wouldn’t know who she gave it to.

Summer of 2016

Rosalie wrote me that though she respected her Uncle Sam and appreciated his advice, she wanted more than anything to find those graves. So one day she decided that she would at least call the St. Michael's Cemetery. Maybe there had been changes in the neighborhood? She just had to know.

Below are Rosalie's email notes to me the day after she and her husband Mike Kiernan visited St. Michael's Cemetery:

By now you probably have the pictures and wondering what are they?? Didn’t want to take a chance on you not getting everything.

Without the help of the cemetery people we would have never found any of this. No markers - No nothing!

This was a city cemetery back in 1912, and I can see by so much land and no grave stones, people did not have money to bury their dead. So sad.

This is NOT a bad neighborhood. Just lower income people living in the area, without much money. Might have been bad years ago.

This cemetery is a beautiful, large cemetery. They keep the grounds immaculate.

I was happy to have Mike with me. My phone didn’t work for me, so he took the pictures.

We had a wonderful day today walking around this beautiful cemetery. They use to call it “The Italian Cemetery”, not any more. But, as you look at names, they are all ITALIAN. Made me feel good.

Next she sent more so I would understand what they found, and what they didn't find:

Hope this helps you. It means a lot to me.

Here I am again. I didn’t want to take a chance of some of this not getting in one email. So, I will tell you in this email what the pictures are.

#1 Sign pointing to where Grave 56 would be

#2 Sign on end of aisle to show it is Aisle 19A. Looks like it has been there since 1912.

#3 This grave stone was showing us that Grave 56 was on the other side of the grave stone.

#4 This is where Pietro Ciarametaro is buried, Grave #56. There are no markings anywhere. We had a cemetery man to show us where it would be.

#5 Aisle #18 is where Joseph Ciarametaro (Pietro’s 13 year old son) is buried. This plot is grave 74.
