a1422: Re: a1386: An Agenda for the President's Visit to LatinAmerica: Security, Democracy, and Trade (fwd)

From: M Schumann <schumannm@hotmail.com>

This very long essay is interesting in that it takes all mainstream
assumptions regarding "free-trade", "democracy", "drug trafficking" etc. as
givens. Some would suggest that Bush's version of free-trade, that is, when
it supports his side only (see steel tariff for one instance) apparently
runs counter to democracy in many cases. For instance, the previous list
post about Cellucci highlights only one among many cases where the US has
supported brutal dictators OVER more democratic, or, god forbid, socialist,
leaders, in exchange for MONEY. Give me a break with all of this pseudo
scholarship will you.
